Since we're working our way toward Halloween, I thought I'd share excerpts from my two paranormal romances for the rest of the month of October. Today's excerpt comes from BURNING LOVE. Iris has fallen in love with her roommate Riley, but he doesn't seem to feel the same way. Iris believes all is lost.
Blurb, BURNING LOVE:
After causing three cooking fires in her apartment, Iris Jensen finds herself evicted and homeless. She lands on Riley Benson's doorstep, looking to rent a room in the beautiful old home he's restoring. It's only for six weeks until Iris leaves Portland, Oregon for her new job on a cruise ship. Firefighter Riley knows firsthand what a bad tenant she can be. But he needs money to finish the work on the house he loves. And something about Iris pulls at his heart…
Meanwhile, in Heaven, two angels watch over the young lovers. Angelica and Hildegard work in Heaven's Relationship Division, where angels match mortals with their soul mates. The angels believe so strongly in Iris and Riley’s love that they break Heaven's rules to help them. Can the angels convince them their love will last a lifetime?
Excerpt:
Iris’s heart fluttered as Riley closed the distance between them. Inch by excruciating inch, he lowered his head to hers, and Iris held her breath, her body shuddering in delicious anticipation as she waited for his kiss. When his lips finally touched hers, a dam burst open, releasing a torrent of emotions long held back. Iris wound her arms around his neck, holding him tightly, melding her body to his. He tasted sweet, like the honey he used in his tea. She breathed in his unique scent, a combination of spicy aftershave and hardworking male. She never wanted to let him go.
Riley abruptly broke the kiss. Shock and something that looked like fear filled his eyes. “I hadn’t meant to do that. I’m sorry.”
“Are you sorry you kissed me?” she whispered.
Riley averted his gaze and shook his head slightly. But the look on his face was so remorseful that Iris knew she had her answer.
He was sorry.
He took several steps away from her. She wrapped her arms around herself, feeling suddenly cold.
“We can’t let this happen again,” he said. “There’s no point.”
Did he mean because she was leaving or because he didn’t care about her?
“I start a four-day shift early tomorrow morning,” Riley said, not quite looking at her. “I should get some sleep.”
“Yes, of course.”
“I probably won’t see you much the next few days.”
He stood in front of her but Iris knew he’d already left. She swallowed. “No, probably not.”
For a moment he looked as if he wanted to say more. Instead, he nodded briskly. “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
Iris watched him leave the kitchen and hurry up the stairs. She heard the soft click of his bedroom door closing. The exact same sound her heart made as it broke in two.

The door closing and her heart breaking - great metaphor!
